Site description

The Sava River, which flows through Bosnia and Herzegovina, is one of the major rivers in the region, forming part of the larger Danube River Basin. It plays a crucial ecological role, serving as an important freshwater resource, supporting diverse ecosystems, and providing habitats for various species. The river is characterized by its rich biodiversity, including fish species, aquatic plants, and riparian vegetation. Its floodplains are vital for flood control, maintaining water quality, and supporting agriculture.

However, the Sava River is also influenced by human activities such as agriculture, industrialization, and urbanization, which have led to challenges like pollution, habitat loss, and alterations in water flow. Sustainable management of the river is essential to preserving its ecological integrity, ensuring the protection of its biodiversity, and balancing human use with conservation goals.

Ecosystem

The Sava River ecosystem near Gradiška hosts diverse species in both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Key species include fish such as the common carp, pike, and catfish, as well as aquatic plants like reed and water lilies. The riverbanks are home to bird species like herons and ducks, and the surrounding floodplains support plants such as willows and poplars. These habitats, including wetlands, forests, and riparian zones, provide crucial resources for both migratory and resident species. The ecosystem is vital for maintaining regional biodiversity and supporting various life stages of many species.

DALIA Implementation Plan

  • Outcome 1 – Stakeholder engagement and baseline dialogue
    • Initial stakeholder workshop in the Gradiška / Sava River pilot area to introduce the WATER-GUIDE objectives, and collect input from local and regional actors.
    • Carry out stakeholder mapping, targeted consultations and feedback collection to identify key environmental pressures, institutional needs and priorities for river revitalisation.
    • Update and validate the stakeholder register to support the co-design of locally relevant revitalisation guidance.
  • Outcome 2 – Development and review of revitalisation guidance
    • Draft guidance for the revitalisation of water bodies in the Sava River context, with a focus on nature-based solutions, ecological restoration and practical governance measures.
    • Consultation workshop to review the first draft of the guidance with technical institutions, public authorities and other relevant stakeholders.
    • Integrate comments and recommendations from consultations, surveys and bilateral meetings into the revised guidance document.
  • Outcome 3 – Validation, awareness raising and dissemination
    • Organise additional validation and dissemination workshops during the second project year to test the relevance, feasibility and transferability of the proposed guidance.
    • Implement public awareness and communication activities through media outreach, printed and digital materials, and community-oriented dissemination actions.
    • Produce a final dissemination package including the revitalisation guidelines, summary materials and presentation content to support wider replication in Bosnia and Herzegovina and across the Sava River Basin.

Involvement of the Community

The community around the Sava River will be actively engaged in the restoration plan through workshops, public surveys, and consultations to ensure their needs and concerns are addressed. Local residents, farmers, and businesses will contribute to the decision-making process, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the river’s revitalisation. The project will raise awareness about the importance of sustainable water management, empowering the community to adopt nature-based solutions. Benefits to the community will include improved water quality, better flood resilience, and new opportunities in eco-tourism and sustainable agriculture, contributing to local economic growth and a higher quality of life.

Expected Impact

The primary objective of this WATER-GUIDE project is to develop and implement a comprehensive set of guidelines for the revitalisation of water bodies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, specifically focusing on the Sava River as the target water body in our region with positive impact on biodiversity, water quality, and flood resilience in the region.

The long-term goal of the WATER-GUIDE project is to restore the ecological balance of the Sava River while ensuring the sustainable use of its resources. By implementing nature-based solutions and engaging local stakeholders, the project aims to improve biodiversity, water quality, and flood resilience in the region. Through a participatory approach, the project will create a model for river revitalisation that can be replicated across the Balkans, contributing to long-term ecological health and sustainable water management practices.
