Site description

The Mondego River basin, the fifth largest river in Portugal, spans 6,645 km² and runs 258 km from Serra da Estrela to the Atlantic Ocean. It is a critical habitat for diadromous species like the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) and shad (Alosa alosa). The river has faced significant ecological challenges due to hydraulic infrastructure, pollution, and climate change, leading to a decline in sea lamprey populations.

Ecosystem

The Mondego River basin supports diverse aquatic ecosystems, including key species like the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) and shad (Alosa alosa). These species are vital for biodiversity and local fisheries. The river also features habitats such as spawning grounds for migratory fish, floodplains, and riparian zones. However, habitat fragmentation and degradation threaten these ecosystems.

Facts & Figures

1-2k

Translocation of 1,000-2,000 adult lampreys

15-20

Monitoring Sites: 15-20 sites across the Mondego River and its tributaries

150

Community Outreach: At least 150 students from local municipalities will participate in educational programs

30-40

Stakeholder Engagement: 30-40 national, regional, and local stakeholders are expected to be involved in conservation efforts

Location

Portugal, Coimbra Region, Mondego River Basin, 15-20 locations along the Mondego River and its tributaries (Ceira and Alva rivers).

Size

The river stretch of about 6 km with floodplain of about 44 hectares.

This exceptional area holds the distinction of being the first river entirely within Portuguese territory and a critical stronghold for diadromous species like the sea lamprey, which is both ecologically and economically vital to the region.

Existing projects

None.

DALIA Implementation Plan

  1. Pilot Translocation of Adult Lampreys: Translocation of 1,000-2,000 adult sea lampreys annually to upstream areas to increase larval abundance.
  2. Ecosystem Status Assessment - As it is recommended to conduct an initial ecosystem assessment, the 2nd activity of FozWaSe includes the initial assessment of the Mondego Estuary, as well as its monitoring throughout the project’s life. It will be essential to understand how the transport of pollutants takes place
  3. Monitoring Sea Lamprey Population: Annual electric fishing campaigns to assess population status and identify larval hotspots.
  4. Monitoring Fishing Activity: Surveys and visual counts to evaluate fishing impact and lamprey abundance.
  5. Community and Fishermen's Awareness: Workshops, social media campaigns, and public events to engage stakeholders and raise awareness.
  6. Coordination & Dissemination: Management and communication of project results to stakeholders and the public.

Involvement of the Community

The community will benefit from increased lamprey populations, which support local fisheries and gastronomic tourism. Fishermen will be directly involved in translocation and monitoring activities, while educational programs will engage schools and local residents. Public events and workshops will raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity and sustainable practices, fostering a sense of collective responsibility for ecosystem restoration.

Expected Impact

The long-term goal is to restore the sea lamprey population in the Mondego River basin, ensuring the sustainability of the species and the local economy. This includes promoting ecological connectivity, improving water quality, and fostering community involvement in conservation efforts. The project aims to create a replicable model for other river basins facing similar challenges.
