Tunisia Set to Launch Major Ecosystem Restoration Action in the Medjerda Delta

DALIA AR MEDECO RESTOR KoM

On 10–11 February 2026, Tunisia will officially launch the MEDECO-RESTOR project with a high-level DALIA Associated Region Kick-off Meeting and Workshop in the Medjerda Delta, marking an important milestone for ecosystem restoration and climate resilience in the country.

Organized under the DALIA – Rivers Revived Open Call, the event will bring together national authorities, scientists, local stakeholders, and international experts to initiate concrete action for restoring the Medjerda Delta and the Ghar El Melh Lagoon, areas facing severe erosion, salinization, and climate pressures.

The kick-off meeting will highlight the transfer of knowledge from the Danube Delta Monitoring System (DPS7) to Tunisia, combining automated monitoring, innovative sensors, and AI-based tools to better understand sediment dynamics and water quality and to support Nature-based Solutions for ecosystem restoration.

Field visits to the Medjerda River Low Valley and a national stakeholder workshop hosted by DGRE will further strengthen dialogue between science, policy, and local communities, ensuring shared ownership and long-term impact.

With MEDECO-RESTOR, Tunisia is preparing to position the Medjerda Delta as a Mediterranean lighthouse for sustainable delta restoration, reinforcing regional cooperation and paving the way for resilient coastal and riverine ecosystems.
